City: Castle Rock State/Prov.: Colorado Occupation: Water Resources Engineer/Project Manager Marital Status: Married If married - how long?: 3.5 years What have you been doing for the last 10 years?: It all seems like a blur, but grad school at Colorado State U for Water Resources Engineering, then off to Sacramento&Denver for 4-5 years for my first ?real? job in a consulting firm. I concluded that I hated my life and the world of billable hours, so I left and took off traveling around the world for a year. I did water resources/development volunteer work in London, Uganda and Thailand. During the trip I met Cate, my now wife of 4 years, in South Africa. Cate was working at a Game Reserve/Safari Lodge where I stayed. Our courtship spanned over 5 countries thanks to the INS who would only allow Cate into the States once in two years. Worth the trouble, she?s the greatest. When I got back to reality, I went to work for the City of Loveland, Colorado then moved to the Town of Castle Rock, Colorado. I currently work for the Town as the project manager of the water resources department by day and am completing an International MBA by night. Cate and I are enjoying the CO outdoors and traveling back to South Africa when we can. What did you do for the 10 years after OHS?: Graduated (barely) from MSU in Civil Engineering, bought a flannel shirt and moved to Seattle to follow Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Not really, but toiled around in various jobs from a pizza boy to environmental analyst to braving the hills and rain as a bike messenger. Eventually volunteered and then worked for the State of Washington in water resources. Decided I liked that. From Steve: It's been fun reading all these posts. There are a lot of different paths to happiness out there. See you in July. |

I write about comic books and pop music for a whole bunch of newspapers and magazines, and I've also written a couple of books: "Live at the Apollo," about a performance James Brown gave in Harlem one night during the Cuban missile crisis, and "Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean," which is coming out this summer. Other than that? Getting married, having a kid, playing in a bunch of no-account bands, learning to play the ukulele, doing some performance/installation-art stuff at Burning Man, moving to Portland, continuing to run the record label; stuff like that. What did you do for the 10 years after OHS?: Got my English degree from Harvard, came back to East Lansing and worked in retail for six months, had a "what am I DOING?!" moment, and moved to New York City, where I temped for a year and a half, started the tiny record label Dark Beloved Cloud, and ended up being the managing editor of the music magazine CMJ for four years and change. From Douglas: Lisa Gidley, my wife, has her own site at http://www.spiraling.com , and Sterling, our awesome 2-year-old, has his at http://www.sterlingwolk.com ... |
